The First Chapter Contest is open to any author or writer, age 18 or older, with a First Chapter written in English to share.

Author MUST own the rights to publish his/her First Chapter, and it must be the author's original work.

WIPs, completed manuscripts, self-published books, traditionally published books, and independently published books are eligible.

Publisher must be listed.

There will be ONE winner per contest.

The winner will receive:

  • 25 printed paperback copies of your book, sponsored by Author2Market
  • Specific mention in PR Web news release announcing the contest winners with a link to your blog/website
  • Bragging rights until the Summer Author Event in June 2016
  • A lovely badge to add to your book, website, blog, etc.

This winner of this contest will be determined by the voting public, based on a point system. The public will vote on each contest entry by offering feedback in the form of "likes," "shares," and comments. A "like" will be worth 1 point. A "share" will be worth 2 points. A comment will be worth 3 points.

The submission accruing the most points, as of the close of the contest on December 9, 2015 at 11:59 p.m. PSD will be determined the winner.

In the event of a tie, the authors who have tied will each be assigned a consecutive number, starting with 1. These numbers will then be inserted into a Random Number Drawing Tool and a winner will be selected at random.

In order to claim the 25 printed books, winner must provide a digital copy of his/her book (one high-resolution PDF of FULL book cover with front, back, and spine, and a separate PDF of the book's contents) for printing by December 1, 2016.

Laura Orsini, Write | Market | Design, and the "Holiday Author Event” are offering you the chance to win the prizes listed here:

1. Eligibility. The First Chapter Contest is open to any author or writer, age 18 or older, with a First Chapter written in English to share, and who holds a valid email address. Author MUST own the rights to publish his/her First Chapter, and it must be the author's original work. WIPs, completed manuscripts, self-published books, traditionally published books, and independently published books are eligible. Publisher must be listed.

There will be ONE winner per contest.

Employees of Write | Market | Design and each of its respective affiliated companies or agents and their immediate family members (spouse, children, step-children, parents, step-parents, siblings and in-laws), and any person domiciled with such employees, are not eligible. Write | Market | Design is not responsible for transmission failures or errors in any promotional graphics or advertisements. Winners must be in compliance with this Agreement and all Contest Terms and Conditions to collect a prize. Void where prohibited by law.

2. Method of Entry; Deadline for Submission. The contest begins December 1, 2015 at 12:00 a.m. PSD and ends December 9, 2015 at 11:59 p.m. PSD. Multiple entries are allowed, as long as each entry is accompanied by the appropriate $10 entry fee. Participants agree to receive periodic email and newsletters from Write | Market | Design and/or the Holiday Author Event.

As a Participant in the Contest, you agree to the following terms:

a. To claim any prize, winner must supply his/her real name, a valid mailing address, and an accurate, functional email addresses that belongs to the Participant.
b. Participant certifies that he/she is over the age of 18 at the time of entry.
d. Participant will not opt out of the Holiday Author Event mailing list prior to completion of the Holiday Author Event.
e. Participant will maintain his/her entry email address throughout the time period of the Holiday Author Event.

3. Voluntary Submission; Selection of Winners. Participants agree to voluntarily submit their contact information to the Holiday Author Event. This winner of this contest will be determined by the voting public, based on a point system. The public will vote on each contest entry by offering feedback in the form of "likes," "shares," and comments. A "like" will be worth 1 point. A "share" will be worth 2 points. A comment will be worth 3 points.

Write | Market | Design may terminate or revoke the Contest and/or any offer or promotion related thereto at any time by posting a notice on HolidayAuthorEvent.com. All Contest entry fees will be refunded in the event of a cancellation of the Contest for any reason.

Write | Market | Design may also modify the Contest Terms and Conditions at any time by posting changes on this page. It is each Participant's responsibility to periodically check this page to familiarize yourself with the current version of the Contest rules. The winner(s) of the Contest are responsible for all taxes, duties and other governmental charges that may be payable with respect to a prize, and Write | Market | Design shall have the right, but not the obligation, to withhold any amounts from any prize that it, in its sole discretion, determines are required to be withheld or paid to any governmental authority.  Notwithstanding any event contemplated in this Section 3 (including any modification, revocation or termination of the Holiday Author Event or the voiding of any offer or promotion relating to the daily drawings, Sections 5-9 below shall remain in full force and effect and shall not be held to be rescinded, unenforceable or otherwise ineffective for failure of consideration or any other reason. You understand and agree that submission your information and your acceptance of the terms of this Agreement do not guarantee that you will be selected as a winner in the Contest.

4. Prizes. Prizes will be awarded to the eligible winner, as indicated above. In order to claim the 25 printed books, winner must provide a digital copy of his/her book (one high-resolution PDF of FULL book cover with front, back, and spine, and a separate PDF of the book's contents) for printing by December 1, 2016. Printed books will be shipped to the mailing address provided on the Holiday Author Event "Author Intake Form." A copy of the news release and "Winner's Badge" will be emailed to the address provided on the Holiday Author Event "Author Intake Form."

5. Winner Notification and Acceptance. Winner will be selected within 12 hours of the close of the Contest and will be announced at the Wrap-Up Party, taking place Thursday, December 10, 2015 from 3 to 6 p.m. PSD. There shall be no prize substitutions and all prizes are non-transferable. Contest winner will be solely responsible for the reporting and payment of any taxes, if applicable, as well as all other costs associated with claiming the prize. Winners must remain in compliance with all the terms of this Agreement in order to collect a prize.

6. License and Assignment of Intellectual Property. Participant is solely responsible for copyrighting his/her own work. By participating, you agree to be bound by this Agreement and the decisions of Write | Market | Design. Write | Market | Design reserves the right to disqualify persons found tampering with or otherwise abusing any aspect of the Holiday Author Event daily drawings. In the event that the Holiday Author Event "First Chapter Contest" is compromised by tampering or other causes beyond the reasonable control of Write | Market | Design which corrupts or impairs the administration, security, fairness or proper operation of the Holiday Author Event daily drawings, Write | Market | Design reserves the right in its sole discretion to suspend, modify, or terminate the Contest. Should the Contest be terminated prior to the stated closing date, Write | Market | Design reserves the right to award prizes based on the points received prior to the termination date. All decisions regarding disqualification of entries shall be at the sole discretion of Write | Market | Design and the judges. Write | Market | Design is not liable for lost, late, delayed, damaged, incomplete, or misdirected entries. Write | Market | Design shall also not be liable for email or transactions that are lost or for failure to receive entries due to transmission failures or technical failures of any kind, including, without limitation, malfunctioning of any network, hardware, or software, whether originating with sender or with Write | Market | Design. This contest is not affiliated with SquareSpace or any entity outside Laura Orsini, Write | Market | Design, or the Holiday Author Event, and SquareSpace is not responsible for the accuracy of information stated in the Contest rules, nor is SquareSpace liable for any loss to any contest Entrant. For these purposes, an email account holder shall mean the natural person assigned to such email account by the Internet service provider, online service provider or other organization responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with such email account.

Your name, physical address and/or email address will not be shared with or sold to any third party organization, and will be protected to the greatest extent possible by Write | Market | Design. Addresses are used by Write | Market | Design for prize distribution and the occasional distribution of email updates, newsletters and offers.

7. Limitations of Liability. By entering the Contest, Participant and his/her affiliated organization, if any, hereby agrees that all disputes, claims, and causes of action arising out of or in connection with the Contest, or any prizes awarded, shall be resolved individually without resort to any form of class action. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, Write | Market | Design SHALL NOT BE LIABLE TO YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY FOR ANY DIRECT OR SPECIAL, INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING IN ANY WAY OUT OF THIS AGREEMENT OR THE CONTEST (INCLUDING DAMAGES FOR LOST PROFITS, BUSINESS, REVENUES OR OPPORTUNITIES), WHETHER IN TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), STRICT LIABILITY OR INDEMNIFICATION, AND EVEN IF A REMEDY FAILS OF ITS ESSENTIAL PURPOSE, AND YOU HEREBY SPECIFICALLY WAIVE THE RIGHT TO CLAIM THAT ANY ATTORNEY’S FEES BE AWARDED. TO THE EXTENT THAT, NOTWITHSTANDING THE FOREGOING, neither Laura Orsini nor Write | Market | Design CAN BE HELD LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES, YOU HEREBY WAIVE ANY STATUTORY, COMMON LAW OR OTHER LEGAL RIGHTS TO MAKE ANY CLAIMS FOR ANY AMOUNTS OUTSIDE OF ACTUAL OUT-OF-POCKET COSTS IN ENTERING THE CONTEST AND YOU FURTHER AGREE THAT Laura Orsini and Write | Market | Design's AGGREGATE LIABILITY IN CONNECTION WITH THIS AGREEMENT AND THE CONTEST SHALL IN NO CASE EXCEED $150. The foregoing limitations of liability shall apply to the fullest extent permitted by law in the applicable jurisdiction.

8. Construction. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of this Agreement, or the rights and obligations of any Participant and their affiliated organization or Write | Market | Design shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Arizona without giving effect to any choice of laws or conflict of laws rules or provisions that would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than Arizona. Any action or proceeding arising out of or relating to this Agreement shall be brought in the state and federal courts of record of and for Phoenix, Arizona. Participant consents to the jurisdiction of such courts in any such action or proceeding and waives any objection to the laying of venue of any such action or proceeding in such court. In the event that any provision herein is determined to be invalid or otherwise unenforceable, these rules shall be construed in accordance with their terms as if the invalid or unenforceable provisions were not contained therein and the provisions deemed unenforceable or invalid by a court of competent jurisdiction shall be blue penciled as narrowly as possible in order to make the provisions valid and enforceable. If Write | Market | Design prevails in any action or proceeding to enforce this Agreement or arising out of your story or participation in the Contest, Write | Market | Design shall be entitled to recover, in addition to all other available legal and equitable relief, its legal costs and fees, including reasonable attorneys’ fees. Any waiver by Laura Orsini or Write | Market | Design of any term or condition of this Agreement or any breach thereof shall be in writing, executed by Write | Market | Design, and any such waiver, in any one instance, will not waive such term or condition in any other instance or any subsequent breach thereof. This Agreement is not assignable by Participant, prospective Participant, or any party other than an official designated representative of Write | Market | Design. Write | Market | Design may assign its rights under this Agreement without condition to any third party or affiliated entity. This Agreement will be binding upon and will inure to the benefit of the parties, their successors and permitted assigns.

9. General Release. By entering "First Chapter Contest," you agree to release Write | Market | Design, each prize provider, and their affiliated companies, agents, licensees, distributors, partners, service providers, publicists, representatives, agents, successors and assigns from and against all claims and damages arising in connection with your participation and/or entry in the Contest (including, without limitation, claims, costs, injuries, losses or damages related to rights of publicity or privacy, defamation or portrayal in a false light) and/or your receipt or use of any prize awarded in the Contest, including, without limitation, any injury or harm resulting from the use of the prize or any activity related thereto. Prizes are awarded “as is” with no warranty or guarantee, expressed or implied, outside of the manufacturer’s limited warranty, if any.
